"Art Based Games" is a book by Don Pavey (Methuen 1979) - it has some inspirational ideas.  I won't refer to it again, it is on its own.

Art Game 1

Teams battle over territory in this art game. Create a grid on a very large piece of paper - the most suitable grid for you can only be determined by you - but start with at least 10 x 10 on A1 paper. Teams have two paints each - a dark and a light tone of one colour and a thick brush. There are two stages to this game.

Stage 1: territory is defined. Using 2 dice teams use the light colour to create areas - e.g. a six means six squares - these must be painted in using the light tone. Teams take a go each until the paper is filled.

Stage 2: territory is marked. Using only one of the dice teams use the dark tone to draw lines from the centre of a square, running parallel with the lines to another - e.g. a five would create a the equivalent of five squares long. The image above is how a section of the game area should look.

Art Game 2: Mondrian

The Dutch abstract artist Piet Mondrian used only primary colours in his work. The purpose of this game is to consider how to use compositional space.
