In creating something inspired by a limitation
it cannot be emphasised strongly enough that process is more important
than product.
This is about encouraging looking, listening, participating. It is not, necessarily, about making. The making is a by product of working, of being with others, of discovery. To consider the end result (e.g. a painting) prematurely can result in reflecting too much on a limited aesthetic, an aesthetic which is more or less defined by a visual culture derived from television and advertising and an aural culture from pop music. These things in themselves are not to be dismissed, of course not, but there is so much more which can inform our aesthetic judgement. Essentially this is about values, what we value by default and what we should value. This may change from generation to generation, from culture to culture, from one person to the next but it is so often never explicit. 'Endless Limitations' offers ways of exploring these values and aesthetics without a full assault upon any individual's sense of who they are. Some of the greatest art was made to be just beautiful but these works are often the work of genius. Concentrate on process, on looking or hearing, on making and doing. Where education in the arts is weakest it is when striving to create something preconceived. What happens must develop from exploration of materials. This is best emphasised by process, not product.
