Giacomo Balla (1871 - 1958) | |
|
Balla was converted to Futurism by Marinetti in
1910. His most famous picture 'Dog on a Leash' depicts the
successive positions taken by the dogs' paws and the woman's legs.
The images are superimposed giving an impression of movement in film.
Balla Investigation 1 Study the movement of footballers in a game by using the variable search buttons on a video. Develop portraits of sports personalities in this way. Similarly collect photographs of a particular sports personality in action. Create a collage of movements by superimposing layer on layer. An investigation like this can be helped with the use of a photocopier to reduce or enlarge elements. A scanner and graphic software would also useful tools in this exploration. Avoid the temptation to create a lifelike portrait. (see aesthetics). Balla Investigation 2 Think of the movements used by a tennis player, or someone playing ping pong. Video someone playing a game which involves movement of the arms. Use these gestures to develop paintings or dance. On a sheet of large paper (the design of a table tennis table could be drawn in) allow two 'competitiors' to represent a game of table tennis with large paint brushes. Colours could depict aggression and/or strength of movement. Similarly using a frame by frame analysis depict the movements of players and ball in a soccer game, or for a small portion of it.
