Richard Diebenkorn (1922 - 1944) | |

Richard Diebenkorn's paintings are huge
geometric areas of colour, colour which evokes the light of his California
home. The paintings are empty, loose and beautiful.
Diebenkorn Investigation 1 This demands space to work - and space to exhibit the work afterwards - although I have often been tempted to work straight onto walls. Use a digital camera to take pictures of 'empty' areas of landscape - sky, water, distant views. Spend time outside, making small representations of mobvement - birs, clouds, cars, litter. Use these lines of movement to divide huge areas of paper or any other suitable painting surface. Develop the areas created with the colours explored using the digital camera. Diebenkorn Investigation 2 Investigate a small part of a large building, the point where a window meets a wall, or the point where the building meets the street. Use these abstractions as a basis for working on larger paintings.
