  Marcel Duchamp (1887 - 1968)
Duchamp's 'The Bride Stripped Bare by Her Bachelors, Even' is a work of literature and philosophy, of esoteric ideas and flippant, throwaway nonsense.  Duchamp was involved with the Dadaists,  and he was an intellectual who famously stopped making art to concentrate on chess.

He is notorious for his ready made 'Fountain' - a urinal which he signed 'R.Mutt' and which is today displayed in the New Tate.

Duchamp Investigation 1

Make a collection of ready mades.  Present them as works of art and discuss their significance, importance, histories, etc.

Duchamp Investigation 2 (difficult)

Make a collective work which explores an abstract theme - e.g. 'silence' or 'misery', but which somehow tells a story - encourage contributions in as many forms as possible - then use these to create one large work.  Limit how ideas may be developed in a number of ways:

  • create collages of objects (sweet wrappers, newspaper cuttings) but don't allow glue or conventional forms of sticking (like tape).  Clips, pins, sewing etc will have to be investigated.
  • allow writing, suggest words be enlarged on a photocopier and recreated using paint and thick brushes.
  • suggest junk is used to create initial ideas which are then photographed and explained as if they were highly technical.
  • limit certain groups to using only objects which, for example, a) will fit in a cup b) will float c) are from old clothes

These various elements must be combined to create a story.  The story does not have to be clear or explicit and can be reinterpreted a number of ways, but stressing where things start, what happens next, is important.
