The music of 'minimalist' composers such as
Glass, Reich, Eno offer many possibilities. Listen to 'Music for 18
musicians' by Steve Reich or the beginning of 'Music in 12 parts' by
Philip Glass. These pieces use simple repetitive phrases to create a lush,
hypnotic field of sound. Children can work to find one phrase they can all
play, then play it as a 'loop' with one child conducting, adding or
removing instrumentalists. Reich produced work which used clapping,
creating rhythms that repeated but which evolved into other rhythms. In
Reich's different trains he used speech samples to develop melodies. Using
'sound recorder' on any Windows programme children could record a
conversation and remove phrases to develop rhythmically. The original
words can be used as a chant or new words written.
