  the object as concept

Instead of using an object to create a representation it could be considered for its conceptual possibilities.  Below are objects redescribed as concepts and then their potential as source material for works of art explored.

Using an Object as a Concept

These sessions attempt to make visual art from a perspective other than the strictly visual.  Objects are used to develop concepts which involve what is known about something rather than what is seen.  I hope to show these ideas can be applied to other areas of creative activity.

Using a Tree

Look at trees outside and discuss their form and growth – what is known is as important as what is seen.  What can be said about how a tree grows?  It begins from a seed and grows both upwards and downwards.  As it grows it moves outwards, repeating itself and developing, at its extremities, leaves – surfaces which are the engines of its growth.

Can these ideas be transferred into a) visual art  b) into b) sonic art?

A Tree Picture

Consider a seed of an idea – what is the idea – a pattern, an accidental mark – a picture taken from a magazine – then that is repeated and expanded upon – starting at a centre and moving upwards and downwards.  At some point some means of obtaining information or sustenance from the outside world can be added, as well as fluorescences, showy, attractive elements.

Using an Apple

This is a means of delivering a seed, an idea to the future.  The seed is contained in an attractive and portable case.  Examine it structurally.

Using a Bicycle

This transfer downward motion into circular motion, magnifying that motion many times – consider speed, wind, turning, the tyres marks, braking, riding high.
